Although Indore is known for its vibrant celebration of every festival, the city takes Rang Panchmi very seriously !! Indore takes Rang Panchmi celebrations to another level, really !!
On Rang Panchmi - celebrated 5 days after Holi and on the 5th day from Dhulandi (Rangawali Holi) - we Indoreans celebrate the festival of colours, Holi, like no one else in the world !! Literally !! In this most unique and vibrant celebration in the world, a huge procession, traditionally known as the Faag Yatra or the Gair, moves along the city roads, covering areas from Bada Ganpati and Malharganj to Rajwada, in a grand manner, amidst showers of gulal and water, sprayed by water canons.....yes !!
Rang Panchmi is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm in the city !! The Indoreans look forward to playing with colours on Rang Panchmi day even more than Holi !! In its 95-year old history, Indore's unique RANG-PANCHMI GAIR has been cancelled only 2 times (in 2020 and 2021) in order to avoid mass-spreading of the Covid-19 Coronavirus (or the Wuhan virus / Chinese virus) !!
But like every earlier year, this year’s Rang Panchmi promises to be a really memorable one, which will be organised in a grand manner amidst shower of gulal and other colours, and sounds of dholaks and other musical instruments !! The Indore Gair is back with a bang !!
And like every year, the city police leaves no chance and makes elaborate arrangements to ensure that no untoward incidents occur to disrupt the festive mood !! Likewise, the traffic police, with its 350- strong workforce would be seen guarding the streets against rash and reckless drivers !! At least 50 check-points are set up in different areas to monitor and control traffic !!
The best place to enjoy the Indore Gair is from the Rajwada Chowk garden, where you must go early to secure a spot on the boundary wall of the garden facing the Mahalakshmi Temple !!
